Chiang Mai- Elephant sanctuary

We went to an elephant sanctuary today . It is meant to be an ethical sanctuary, as the elephants that are there, are the ones that were used for giving rides . There doesn’t seem to be a plan to integrate the newborns into the wild. Putting that aside we had a great time. We had to change in to the attire provided, and then assist with food preparation for the elephants .

We got to feed them , walk with them , play with them in the river . There was a newborn that chased everyone around crazily and some people got head-butted too . I am the type who is easily scared so was very happy that I overcame some of it and enjoyed my time near them .

As we were heading back, we saw a tribe of long necked Kayan Lahwi women and spent some time with them . I came back and googled and the lady in wikepedia is the one we saw !!  Again a discussion around patriarchy and choices .

The rest of the day was spent relaxing as we are pretty tired from the late night and early start today .
