Staying outside in the suburbs of Sarajevo has to have its perks as Skakavac waterfalls were only 30 minutes by car. It is one of the tallest waterfalls in the Balkans and freezes during winter. It is quite hard to imagine a cold winter here when it’s being so hot.
The drive up there, through the village was an experience by itself. Single lane road going up the mountain, they even have a bus that goes to the village!!!. Luckily there were not many cars making its way down.
There are several hiking trails around the area and the waterfall trail is called the tourist trail, maybe because only tourist come on this trails. Didn’t see many tourists though. It was nice easy hike to get to the waterfall under the cool shade of fir and spruce trees. Savik andd Aanya kept busy along the way talking about different Roblox games so the time passed very quickly.
As it is the height of summer, there was not much water at the waterfall but at times the cool spray of water kept us refreshed. Surprisingly we were the only people there, not many tourist venturing out this far I guess.
There is a loop to get to the top of the waterfall and the picnic area with multiple switchbacks which was quite strenuous , but again the kids were up to the task and made it up quite easily. The lollies they were having along the way may have contributed, but they sure have done some amazing hikes this year. Slight detour as we lost our way coming down but managed to find the “tourist” track and ran down the hills. This time it was Harry Potter stories that kept the two busy.
Back to the apartment in the afternoon to do some school work and we ventured out in the evening to Sarajevo for sun set walk around the city once more.
We were a bit too early for sunset this time around at the yellow fortress, and as it was getting a bit too hot, decided to make our way down to the old city. After exploring the streets and having a Falafel dinner, taking pictures at the Sarajevo sign we were ready to head back and call it a day.
Tomorrow we head off to Mostar, but before we go there is still a little bit more exploring to be done in Sarajevo.
