Marrakesh (gruesome pictures)

Very very quiet streets as we headed out on Eid after a gorgeous breakfast at our Riad. Only people out and about were tourists, though a few tour guides were there too.

We were expecting quite a bit of blood and gore as per what we had read about the sacrifice of the lambs. I think the street with blood pouring out from the drain on the side was still a bit of a shock but we were better prepared after that. Saw lots of bits of sheep in various forms, the heads being roasted on the fires had smoke everywhere. Lots of bikes and carts were taking the pelts away, I guess they will make their way to the tannery. The children handled it quite well, way better than I would have had as a child. Lots of great discussions on different cultures, rituals and acceptance.

We then admired the mosques from the outside, walked around the Jewish quarters and saw a few of the potpourri shops that were open.A few cafes were open, we had ice cream and the children were given fidget spinners too that made their day.

After lunch we headed back to the Bahia Palace which was going to open for visitors in the afternoon. As we were waiting, Savik fell off a metal ball on to the ground. It was one of the worst moments in my life, people rushed from everywhere including a nurse to help. He got up and his face was filled with fear and panic as he couldn’t breathe. I had all the worst case scenarios running through my head as he hit his chest on the way down, with no equipment I was wondering how we would save him. Thankfully he started breathing and it was the pain that had winded him.

We left for the hotel instead and had a few hours of lying down to settle things.

In the evening we went to the Jardin Majorelle. Gardens that took 40 years for a Frenchman to make but went to ruins when he lost his money and property in a divorce. Yves Saint Laurent took it over years later and brought it back to glory. The garden is magnificent, and there is a cobalt blue that is used in a lot of the places, the colour is actually patented as Majorelle blue.

We had fun at the pond, spotting cute baby turtles, a bigger one chomping on the leaves and the well camouflaged frogs as they jumped from one leaf to another. The cacti were also quite interesting and I think my mum would love this place.

We had our last dinner in North Africa, a falafel Super Bowl for the finishing touch. Morocco has been wonderful.
