Day 2 Nile cruise- Kom Ombo temple

Everybody had a relaxing morning today as we didn’t have any activities. If you had booked Abu Simbel through the cruise today is the day they would take you there. It’s a 4 am departure and you would return by lunch time. Thank god we did it before that, not a fan of a 4 am departure.

We relaxed in the cruise with everybody reading their e readers, iPad time and catching up on sleep.

Our excursion this afternoon was to the temple of Kom Ombo. This was built during the Greek and Roman times in Egypt. This is a peculiar temple as the Egyptians created a new god, Sobek the crocodile god. As the Nile around Aswan was infested with crocodiles they needed a god to protect them. This was the cunning way of the high priest to get more money in to the temple. They also had a live crocodile in the temple and when it died, mummified it and kept in tombs. The high priest then selected another “noble” crocodile for the temple. I am sure people soon found out that how ever much praying they did the crocodiles never stopped eating them. That might be the reason why they built another temple for Haroeris (falcon god) in the same complex.

After roaming around the temple, it was fun seeing all the types of gods, the most interesting is the Ibis god (yes there is a bin chicken god) afterwards we headed to the main attraction.

The crocodile museum was a fun place to see mummified crocodiles from more than 3000 years ago. This definitely was a highlight as they have so many crocodiles mummies. Many in glass displays and also how they wrapped the crocodiles and gave offerings, certainly was a good change for the kids from the mundane temple exploring.

Back to the ship for dinner and an early night as we have an early start the next morning.
