Bukhara

We took the bullet train to Bukhara in the morning. I  am not sure why but Aanya was a little scared of how fast it might go but didn’t even feel it was fast when we were in it!

We got quite an angry Yandex driver from the train station, so were a bit sceptical about the people we were going to encounter here. Luckily he was the only rude person.

As part of lunch we ordered garlic bread, very different to anything we have eaten - strips of black fried bread, sprinkled with Parmesan with a garlic dip.  The adults enjoyed it more than the children.

We are staying in the Old town and basically spent the afternoon exploring all of the old town. The buildings are beautiful (as or even more than the ones in Samarkand). They are all within a radius of few kilometres so easy to explore as we slowly strolled along. Lots of beautiful Madrasas and mosques. Gorgeous domed marketplaces with lots and lots of souvenir shops. Reminds us a lot of Jaislamer as the buildings have the same yellow/ golden hue, I guess a similar desert ambience.

We passed a park where the kids learnt some new skills thanks to a teenage boy who took a shine to Savik and wanted to teach him different techniques on using the equipment in the park. They spent ages on the bars and took lots of pictures to get a similar set up when we are home, definitely the highlight for the day .

We saw our first two humps camels, there were very furry with floppy humps. Looked very different to the camels we rode in Rajasthan.

My highlight was seeing the Kalyan minaret, mosque and Madrassahs lit up at night! It was fabulous! The minaret has survived Genghis Khan and the Soviet Union and was called the Tower of Death as people were executed by being thrown off from the top.

Dinner was very nice, tried a lot of local dishes at a very popular restaurant, sadly marred by the smokers around us. Things we take for granted in Australia, smoke free restaurants.

Surprisingly it was a very cold walk back to our hotel, from a hot day to a chilly night. It’s the wind that is freezing and is expected to be the same all day tomorrow.
