Sigiriya and Pidurangala.

Today is the start of our road trip around Sri Lanka . Bundled up the kids for an early start hoping they would do some school work on the way but Aanya promptly went to sleep .

First stop Sigiriya . I wasn’t sure how the children would go with the climb but they were total champs . Aanya was very excited to lead the way ( Savik needed an initial nudge due to the heat but for better along the way ). The stairs would be a challenge for anyone with fear for heights and they weren’t even there when Jeevan used to come here as a child , just a railing !! It’s a beautiful rock to climb and an absolute testament to the King to have built his kingdom on top of it . I love the trees on top of it. We saw the beautiful cave paintings on our way down and were surprised to have the place to ourselves given how busy it had been climbing up .

At lunch we discussed going up another mountain for the day and Aanya was very pumped to climb it ! She literally ran up the whole way when we got to Pidurangala . Savik did not enjoy the initial stairs but loved the scrambling on the boulders at the top , was very much in his element finding the best way to get there .

The view at the summit was absolutely worth the climb . Finally got to see Sigiriya the way I have seen it in most photos . The kids were delighted by the dog that walked all the way up with us . They found a puddle of water to splash their feet it before heading down .

The day ended with us in the pool in Kandalama ( playing water polo )followed by the best dinner buffet possible . We had come here on our honeymoon nearly 17 years so this place has very fond memories for us .

This would come in close for one of my favourite days of the trip .

  1. It is such an amazing place, I found the stairs tricky due to the narrowness but can't imagine doing without them like Jeevan! Very special for Jeevan to be able to share childhood memories with Aanya and Savik.
