Today was spent exploring Delhi. We did a bit of schooling then off to the Lotus Temple.
The kids instantly recognised the similarities between it and the opera house in Sydney so we looked up which came first. They then spent time asking the volunteers lots of questions about it. I learnt a lot about the Baha’i faith and why it’s a lotus temple in India. It has a very serene feel to it and the gardens are so well maintained.
Then out to the hustle and bustle before our tuk tuk took us to Humayun’s tomb. I had forgotten to bring ID along so took some time convincing them of my Indian- ness.
It precedes the Taj Mahal and has quite a few similarities to it! There are 160 tombs in it, so quite a few people buried in here and till a 100 years ago villages had set up in it too.
After that I showed the kids the places in Connaught place I used to love as a child. My favourite Chinese restaurant and the second hand book shop. Had a heavy bag by the end with the books from there. We walked through the park in the middle where kids got to witness first hand the drama of a fight between two people and the police involvement along with the crowds that are part and parcel of it.
Last stop for the day was India Gate. I haven’t been in years and it is gorgeous. The lighting is fabulous and the whole area is so clean.
We were stuck in traffic in a tunnel on the way back. So much of Delhi has been beautified, that we didn’t mind being there as we got to admire all the art work that has been installed!
The skies were blue, people were lovely, food was yummy and the places we went to were fabulous, Delhi really shone today.
What incredible architecture!
